STORYBOOK KIDS PROGRAM

PURPOSE

This program is a wonderful way to help children navigate their emotional and behavioural challenges. By using stories as a tool, you're providing a safe and engaging space for children to explore their feelings and experiences.

How stories can benefit children:

  • Emotional Intelligence: Stories can help children develop empathy, understanding, and compassion for others.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: By following characters through their challenges, children can learn different strategies for overcoming obstacles.
  • Self-Awareness: Stories can help children reflect on their own thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.
  • Language Development: Listening to and discussing  stories can expand children's vocabulary and improve their communication skills.
  • Imagination and Creativity: Stories can spark children's imaginations and encourage creative thinking.

By addressing these areas, this program can help children build resilience, confidence, and a positive outlook on life.

How it Works - Small Groups 2 to 4 children between 6 to 10 years of age

  • Storybook Selection: Having a diverse range of stories addressing various topics (friendship, anxiety, loss, etc.) can help children connect with the themes.
  • Facilitator Training: Trained facilitator in child development, using bibliotherapy will enhance program effectiveness.
  • Parental Involvement: Providing parents with resources and information related to Erikson's stages and how they can support their children's mental health can extend the program's impact.
  • Erikson's Stages Of Development: Understanding these stages can help tailor the      program to address the specific needs of children at different age ranges.

The Storybook Kids Program focuses on building your child's strengths:

  • Engaging Approach: Using children's storybooks for therapy is a creative and non-threatening way to explore challenges.
  • Child-Centered  Focus: Choosing their own book empowers children and allows them to indirectly address their concerns.
  • Person-Centered Therapy: Building trust and rapport is essential for effective therapy, and the Person-Centered approach aligns well with this goal.
  • Supporting Mental Health: Highlighting the importance of mental health in childhood is crucial for overall well-being.

Why therapeutic reading groups are useful?

These are excellent points! Reading and sharing stories with children is a powerful tool for their development. Here are some additional benefits that can be derived from such activities:

  • Emotional Development: Stories can help children identify and understand their own emotions, as well as the emotions of others.
  • Social Skills: Group story sessions can foster cooperation, sharing, and turn-taking.
  • Moral Development: Stories often present moral  dilemmas and ethical choices, which can spark discussions and help children develop their own values.
  • Cognitive Development: Stories can enhance children's problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and memory.
